Projects and Special Events

Part of managing an association is recognizing and delivering special events to celebrate significant milestones. Following is a summary of some projects managed for my clients and employers:

Video

Successfully developed a video project for Saskatchewan Egg Producers (SEP), while their Executive Director, to exhibit and promote transparency in animal care and on-farm food safety in Saskatchewan layer barns. The project included development of the concept, and completion of five videos filmed inside producer layer barns and at the grading station. Funded through partnership dollars from the Federal Provincial Growing Forward 2 Initiative and the Egg Farmers of Canada, SEP was able to leverage their marketing dollars and undertake this successful project creating a better opportunity for consumers to understand the layer industry. Video Production

The video launch included a two-day animal care workshop for Saskatchewan Egg farmers providing training and best practices on layer care and previewing of the five videos. In attendance were guests from government, Egg Farmers of Canada, and members of the media. Interviews were done with radio, television and print mediums and a full article was published in the Western Producer.

Special Events

As Regina Warehouse District Executive Director, Co-chaired the 100th Anniversary of the 1912 Regina Tornado, a 14-month project recognizing the resilience of the early city residents in the face of destruction from what remains the deadliest storm in Canadian history that killed 28 people and left 2,500 homeless. Application to Heritage Canada generated a $100,000 Grant to support the project in addition to contributions from The Warehouse District and Regina Downtown Business District. The $200,000 anniversary event was delivered June 30, 2012. As co-chair, oversight was provided for the art installation, promotion of the finalists, conducting media interviews and leading horse-drawn heritage tours in the Warehouse District. With the Downtown District co-chair, managed the program and day-long event which included federal, provincial and municipal dignitaries, descendants of those who lost their lives and many Regina residents.

Books and Publications

As Executive Director, oversaw the writing and publication of the Regina Warehouse District history book in conjunction with Biographies Regina. This seven year project involved extensive archival research and editing and culminated with a book launch event including media and dignitaries. A full series of media interviews promoting the book and encouraging sales was organized. Special guests included area businesses, government and City of Regina guests. As the most successful book in their history, Biographies Regina required a second printing to meet sales demand.

Community Green Space

Worked to create the Warehouse District’s first ‘pocket park’ to address a need for common area green space. The pocket park provided space for residents and employees to enjoy time outdoors. Working with a property owner, a ten year lease was negotiated for space at the corner of Broad Street and 8th Avenue to establish the small park and seating area. Plants and trees were added as well as installation of custom designed street furniture. The park opening October 18, 2012 included a blessing by First Nations Elder, Francis Heavy Head and installation of an art piece, "Redline”, by Artist Lionel Peyachew. Media coverage of the event was noted as far away as Ottawa.

Architectural Heritage Society’s 25th Anniversary Art Exhibit

In celebration of the Architectural Heritage Society’s 25th Anniversary a project was developed that included archival research and assembly of an art exhibit of over 40 images of historic Saskatchewan built heritage. The images and labelling were hung in the QEII gallery at Government House in Regina for an eight week exhibit drawing excellent feedback for the gallery from patrons and visitors.  Media interviews promoted the association's anniversary and the exhibit launch.
